A concrete expansion joint serves a great purpose in concrete flooring. It is a cut in the concrete that is designed to expand and contract so that it will not crack even in the most extreme heat and cold. Here are a few tips to correctly fill an expansion joint.

1.       Make sure you have the right material. Do not use a material that does not expand or contract as the slab will be likely to crack. Delta Chemicals recommends STAR-FLEX a unique and complete expansion joint repair material. It is specifically designed for use in low temperature areas where a quick fix is required. STAR-FLEX cures to a strong and long lasting seal in only 60 minutes.

2.       Clean the joint thoroughly before applying STAR-FLEX.  Sweep out the joint to remove dirt, pebbles and any other debris. If there are any oils that have seeped into the expansion joints, use a cleaner such as Citra Crystal W-d Limonene. Make sure it is completely dry before applying the filler.

3.       Replace the backer rod if necessary. You can use a foam backer rod or wooden boards. Pour STAR-FLEX into the expansion joint. It will set in only 60 minutes. It does not require heat lamps or propane torches. STAR-FLEX can also be used as a crack filler.
